Interview with Model (and foot lover) Detra Thorn

Though we've never actually met in person Detra seemed like a natural for an interview for the simple fact that through her images I could tell she had a unique connection to and love for her feet. Detra agreed to be interviewed for this little blog of mine and below is the result.
Q: Who are you? (give me a little bio on yourself / your life)
A: Detra Thorn

I've lived in San Diego all my life and love it. I have always had a love/hate relationship with modeling. Entered a modeling agency as a young teen because my parent's thought it would help my self esteem but it ended up doing the exact opposite. I was very insecure, depressed and dangerously thin for much of my teen years. I gave up on modeling and tried to focus on other things in life and for once I didn't give a shit about how I looked. I gained a good healthy amount of weight and no longer looked unhealthy. I tried to keep away from modeling but a lifelong friend that was also a photographer would still ask me to model for her but in more artistic fun types of shots where weight and size did not matter. Shoots were never regular with her but I always looked forward to working with her because she could bring out the best in me and I felt zero pressure to be anything but me. I lost touch with my dear friend and photographer for a good 7-8 years before getting in touch with her again. A shoot was done in February of this year with her that made me excited about art and photography again. I felt confidence even though I'm not model thin. It was a wonderful experience. Detra Thorn was born from an old screen name I once went by "Devious Thoughts" ( I wanted to stick with the DT theme) I've always loved the name Detra and the meaning "to be" and I like the edgy sound of Thorn. Outside of modeling I like to spend time with my friends and family. I have a huge heart for animals but cats are my favorite. I have 3 black and white cats. One of my male kitties has a foot fetish. :)
Q: You seem to have a real connection to your feet and the sexual power of your feet, where does this come from? How did it develop?

A: Foot Fetish is still very new to me. I worked with a photographer recently that has a personal foot fetish and he was interested in me modeling for him. After talking to him I felt very comfortable. Ever since my shoot with him I've had a new love for feet. I think it's a very sexy part of a woman's body that goes unnoticed by many. I notice feet everywhere now.

Q: Can you describe the hottest foot-fetish experience you've had?

A: I love my partner's feet and massaging them with lotion. She's got hot feet! She's a bit insecure about them but I think they are sexy as hell. They turn me on and I love being able to rub them for her after she's worked a long day. It's been our foreplay lately.

Q: What would you like to achieve as a model of fetish?
A: I want people to see the beauty in different parts of a woman's body. It shouldn't be all tits and ass. There is so much more to a woman that I think people are missing out on. I would like people to fall in love with feet the same way I did. Innocently. Something they just sort of stumble across or are introduced to.Q: Does music play a role in your life? If so what role? What music do you enjoy?

A: Music is huge for me. I like mostly New Wave 80's, Industrial, Gothic, Synthpop, Electro and Ethereal mostly. I try to go out dancing at least once a month to the local Goth clubs around town. I took Belly Dancing for 2 years but due to recent back problems and surgery I had to put it on hold. I'm hoping to be strong enough to get back into it some day again.

Q: Where do you find inspiration?

A: I just kind of stumbled across it. :) I've received a great positive response from people that have a love for feet and it makes me happy to be so accepted so quickly by so many kind people. Everyone has been very encouraging.


Q: When are your feet going to be in or near Nashville?!

A: I hope very soon. :)

Nashville based photographer Collin J. Rae will exhibit work in Columbus for the first time. Collin J. Rae is renowned for putting his subjects' best foot forward, both literally and figuratively. Not since the great Elmer Batters has a photographer so obsessively and provocatively adored the sole of women.

Chas Ray Krider will exhibit the working manuscript for his 2007 French publication Do Not Disturb. The manuscript is Chas Ray's personal layout for the book, consisting of 80 prints with over 200 images. The manuscript prints will be installed en masse as Do Not Disturb: the Director's Cut.

Ray-Gun Mambo is a well established LA photographer. He dances easily between the commercial arena and the realm of fine art; hence the Mambo.
And as for Ray-Gun? Think Man Ray in LA during the 1940s... uncanny, inventive and sensual ... as is the work of Ray Gun Mambo. His aim is true.

Interview with Photographer Mariah Carle (and her feet)

One of the truly cool and unique people I've met on this foot journey of mine is model / photographer and friend Mariah Carle. We first met though modelmayhem.com, she had feet and I wanted to photograph them...sooooo we hooked it up and now some years later i decided would be a good idea to look back a bit and interview her for this blog of mine.

Tell us a bit about who you are?
My name is Mariah Carle I run a small photography studio in Pacifica CA, one of my specialties being male nudes. I steal souls then sell them back for a profit.
The images I create are a product of my adventures with others. Sometimes I lead, sometimes, I follow, other times we find a purple striped hoola-hoop in the sand...then the fog rolls in.
I have a fetish for electrical sockets this year, other years it has been blue glass bottles or black dresses.
Sometimes I forget to sell the souls I steal, those are the images labeled "art".

What made you transition from model to photographer? How has it worked out for you thus far?
I wanted more job security, I wanted to be able to continue to create art and love my job as I got older and to be able to work locally as apposed to traveling allover the globe. I wanted to be able to have a more of a home base instead of going to others all the time. Very few women model into their 40's I am already 33, I know I'll still be able to get jobs here & there but there are fewer people who want older models, I can be active in photography until I go blind or die. I am lucky to be able to take all I have learned modeling and use it to help my clients look their best for the camera.

Describe the role that sexuality plays in both your modeling and in your photography.
I have learned as a model that it is not my place to order sexuality around, every time I try to tell society that an image is NON sexual several people wander by and comment of the sexuality they find in it, when I create images I feel are very sexual others come by and tell me they do not see the sexuality in them. I wish my studio to be a save place for all my clients male and female where they can be a little sexy for the camera, for the images, for their secret lovers, but not for me. I am nothing more then a catalyst with a camera, I don't provide the sexuality, my clients provide it, when when they share the photos I have taken of them. I enjoy all the differing people I work with, each has a special need I try to fill, I never judge, I never refuse a job because I might not like their ideas. I love to photograph their ideas and desires, I do not limit myself to any one segment, I photograph women, men, straight gay, I have even done fetish work for clients. Including your favorite fetish of feet...It is my job to take my clients ideas & sexuality and morph them into a photographic piece of art they can look at and enjoy again and again and again.
What sorts of goals have you set for yourself in terms of your photography?
I had a teacher back in High School that told us if we ever found a way to make money doing what we love we would never work a day in our lives. I took a severe cash pay cut to live as a full time artist, by my soul enjoys the benefits from wanting to get up and go to work every day. I want to keep my studio alive, and prosperous, be a active member of my local community, and keep learning and growing as an artist.

I’d like you to put into words our relationship (as you see it) as well as your thoughts on my appreciation for your feet.
You mean the man who is having a lurid long distance affair with my feet? I love others reactions, if they already know about your art and you then they understand, if they do not know who you are some of them think it might be a bit strange. I love telling people that my name is tattooed on your hand. Sometime I leave out the part where other women's names are also tattooed on your hand, it makes me feel more special.
I find the whole idea that since it is my feet that is is not seen as sexual by 99% of society, including my own husband who quotes "No petting above the ankle" Since so many people ignore my feet, it is lovely that you pay so much attention to them. I got a pedicure and a manicure in blue and set up a whole shoot just for this interview.

What do you see for yourself in 2010?
My goals for 2010 are a combination of surpassing 2009 in monetary, education and personal growth. I have one show already in the works for spring and another show I will be entering for summer. I have expanded my boudoir site to include male nude photography & hope to start shooting more couples in 2010.
